Health And Hazard Issues For Electricians
Electricians are exposed to all kinds of hazards. One, exposure to hazardous materials like solvents, solder lead, asbestos etc. Two, being in confined physical spaces. Every year, a number of electricians and other workers die due to having to work in confined spaces. Others who go to rescue them also sometimes get injured or may even their lives too. The reasons are varied and many but the fact remains that confined spaces are a major hazard.
The third and most important hazard is the ever-present danger of electric shock. While it may not be obvious to most people, the electric current in circulation at your homes and places of work is powerful enough to electrocute some one to death. Just a simple contact with something as innocuous as a live part of a lamp, while changing a bulb, can electrocute you to death or burn your hand. You can thus imagine the real danger that electricians have to their lives and limbs as an occupational hazard.
Fourth, having to work in moist and damp areas often, moulds, fungi and bacteria also affect the health of electricians. Any damp surface in homes and other buildings can result in the growth of such fungi and moulds on drywalls, fabric, wood, ceiling tiles, wallpaper and carpets posing real danger to the electrician.
To avoid other problems, electricians have to be extremely alert as they can always trip or slip and fall on wet or oily surfaces, loosely fitted floor coverings and poorly lit areas. Rubbish, uneven paving and other discarded items on the floor are also to be watched out for.
Electricians have to wear protective goggles for their eyes to prevent flying matter in the atmosphere from harming their eyes, particularly when working with power drills and other tools.
When working at heights, there is the ever present danger of losing their footing and they have to be extremely careful and watchful not to. Similarly, they have to wear good quality footwear that will give enough grip on wet or oily surfaces. Since an electrician has to work under extremes of weather conditions, he could get heat stroke or hypothermia if not properly protected and if occurring immediate medical attention must be sought.
Some of the hazards that electricians face have been listed above. Caution and sufficient care, along with alertness can prevent injury or loss of life.
