Electricians install, maintain and repair electrical systems in homes and commercial establishments. While some specialize in one or the other, many are beginning to handle both homes and business establishment jobs. They put in place after proper testing, many electrical systems and appliances. Equipment for climate control, communications, security etc are all installed, maintained and repaired at need by electricians. Only they can do these things as local laws and other safety requirements will have to be followed and they are licensed to do these following the laws and codes.

With the ongoing boom in the construction business, many openings will become available for electricians. The demand for electricians will always be high in homes as well as businesses.

Electricians learn their trade through formal schooling and/or apprenticeship programs. Some start off at vocational schools at a young age. Others gain knowledge through work experience and hands on experience. Some are self employed and others work for sub-contractors and others.

Electricians undertake many types of work, broadly stated - complete new wiring for new buildings, additional wiring for older buildings and maintenance and repair work in all kinds of buildings. They inspect electrical installations on a regular basis and take corrective action wherever needed.

Some of the tools used by electricians are wire cutters, screwdrivers, knives, pliers and hacksaws. They also use a number of powered tools like drills, and testing/measuring devises like ammeters, voltmeters etc.

They are trained to read blue prints, draw up plans and implement them. They cannot be colorblind, as they have to differentiate between different colors of wires used in a coded fashion. They can perform many functions to keep your home safe.

The following traits make for a good electrician. Ability to work under stressful conditions, dexterity, agility and the willingness to work under any kind of climatic conditions. An electrician often has to work under unsanitary conditions besides face extremes of temperature. They must be physically fit and capable of getting in and out of difficult locations.

Proper dressing for the job is very important for the electrician. While dressing to be comfortable for the weather conditions, the clothes must not be too tight to prevent agility nor too loose to avoid getting caught in impediments. Their footwear has to be of comfortable fit allowing a good grip so that they do not slip on wet or oily surfaces, with enough support so that climbing up and down ladders and staircases causes no discomfort. They also have to be of a material that will not be a conductor of electricity.
